“GOOD fences make good neighbours ”, the producers of the new Australian comedy, “Backyard Ashes” are saying, quoting Robert Frost’s famous poem “Mending Wall.”
The film, set in Wagga Wagga in the backyard of a local cricket tragic, Dougie Waters, it intended by its Wagga writer Peter Cox to be “ a microcosm of Australian society” and looks at “the way Australian’s are drawn to their backyards and how we see them as safe places, as a kind of watering hole where people meet and the foundations of our Australian values and ideals begin to develop.”
The film examines the bonds of mateship, the “Aussie Vs Pom” rivalry, and the changing face of Australian life and has been likened to previous Australian films like “ The Castle” and “Crackerjack”.
Tomorrow Limelight Cinemas in Tuggeranong plan to replicate the good old Aussie back yard barbecue and cricket match with a very casual launch where cinema patrons are invited to ‘dress down’, with cricket gear, thongs, sun screen and casual attire warmly welcomed. Stars John Wood, Maddison Smith Catlin, Stephen Holt and Jamie Way, along with director Mark Grentell and writer Cox, both from Wagga, will be on hand to greet fans.
