On the cultural tourism radar: weekend arts

KIM Nelson’s exceedingly popular open studio style gallery at 67 Comur Street Yass (the historic Oddfellows’ Hall) will soon morph into an artist collective.

Nelson is staging a clearance exhibition of his limited edition prints, booklets, cards and original artwork Saturday & Sunday May 24 and 25, 10 am to 4 pm. “I’m glad to say that the venue has really come of age and ended up on the cultural tourism radar,” Nelson tells us.

“KENSUKE Todo: A Survey” is now on show at the Drill Hall Gallery, Kingsley Street, Acton, 12 – 5pm Wednesday to Sunday, until June 29. Curated by former director of the Canberra Museum and Gallery, Peter Haynes, exhibition of “Mild steel sculptures” takes a look at the ‘paradoxical works’ of Japanese-born, Canberra-resident, and Kensuke Todo. Born in Kyoto, educated in Japan and Australia.


AS part of “The Mountains Tour,” the group Chaika will perform original and traditional pieces, “gently wandering through foreign lands,” tomorrow at 7.30pm May 23, in the Artists Shed 14 Foster Street Queanbeyan. THE gallery@bcs “Respect” series is now showing an exhibition of paintings and drawings by the Ginar Maliyan Mob in celebration of Reconciliation Week. The Ginar Maliyan Mob teaches art, dance, music, leadership, confidence and self-pride to young artists and this show is also working in conjunction with the Barnardo’s indigenous kids. All paintings are for sale to help raise funds to get resources for the program in the future. NATALIE Magee will be performing alongside Sydney act Goldheist this Saturday, May 24 in Smith’s Alternative Bookstore for a concert to raise funds for the “We’re For The Bush” NSW Drought Appeal. WESLEY Music Scholars’ Autumn Concert will be held this Sunday, May 25 at 3pm in the Wesley Music Centre. The continuing and newly-appointed scholars are Alys Rayner and Esther Wong (violin), Zanele Ramsay (soprano), Sarah Campbell (mezzo-soprano), Joshua Knol (baritone), Emma Rayner (cello and piano), Matthew Ventura (flute and bassoon), Ciaran Edwards-McKeown (guitar) and Rowan Phemister (harp), Caleb Wong (Cello and piano) and they will perform works by Haydn, Brahms, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Rodrigo, Delibes (The Flower duet) and Manuel de Falla – Kreizler (Danse Espagnole). Tickets at the door. Proceeds go towards the cost of the scholarships.

STRATHNAIRN Arts is presenting “Different Strokes,” an exhibition of works by 19 artists meet every Wednesday at the homestead on Stockdill Drive, Holt. The exhibition will feature traditional watercolours, bright expressive acrylics and oils, pastels and collages by Maria Bendall, Ian Bermingham, Rosemary Brock, Lyne Dingwall, Ruth Dodd, Desley Ferguson, Ann Gould, Adrienne Greenwood, Robyn Hanigan, Julie Hawkins, Eric James, Phillipa Kirkby-Jones, Margaret Langford, Ruth Lathlean, Maureen Lawrentin, Phil Mead, Jenny Nolan, Gael Parr and Judy Tokley. The group developed from a class run by Michael Winters, who will open the show on Saturday, May 24 at 4 PM. All welcome.


Rosie at the Mosaic workshop

QUEANBEYAN City Council has been running mosaic workshops with the community to work on panels for the new Federation Garden (construction underway) in Waniassa Park adjacent to the Queanbeyan Sensory Garden. The eight panels depict the floral emblems of each state and territory, but council needs Queanbeyan residents to help finish them off and is organising another workshop day this Saturday, May 24 at the Queanbeyan Library, 6 Rutledge Street, from 10am – 3pm. Refreshments, lunch and all materials will be provided – but you must be at least 12 years old to participate.
