Dance spectacular and other arts coming up this weekend

KULTURE Break is presenting a big night of dance fun again this year with “Dance Nation School Spectacular 2014” and the “Arcade Expo Fundraising Concert,” featuring 14 schools with over 300 performances, and special guests Swagamama (QLD) and Downforce (ACT).

Patch Theatre Company, South Australia’s longest running Theatre Company for children, weaves together six of Pamela Allen’s beloved stories in “Mr McGee and the Biting Flea,” performed from one Friday and Saturday, June 27-28, at Canberra Theatre Centre as part of a national tour. YASSarts’ newest endeavour involves the re-imagining of the OddFellows’ Arts Centre, previously run as an art studio by Kim Nelson, into a venue to continue in his tradition, showcasing regional arts practitioners of the Yass Valley region. Exhibitions will change on a monthly basis to ensure exposure is given to as many practitioners as possible. House concerts will continue, along with a range of other events like workshops. The opening by Katrina Hodgkinson MP, Patron of YASSarts, will take place tomorrow   Friday, June 27 at   7pm in The OddFellows’ Hall 67 Comur St, Yass. All welcome.


CANBERRA Playback Theatre Company presents “Rewards & Rip Offs” in the QL2 Theatre, Gorman House tomorrow, and Friday June 27 at 7.30pm. Playback Theatre is a form of improvisational theatre in which audience members tell stories from their lives and then watch as actors and musicians enact them on the spot. Tomorrow they’ll be asking, “When you have been rewarded, felt satisfaction, felt Tickets at the door (cash only).

DON Burrows (yes, the famous musician), Ken Knight, Nicole Scerri, Robert Simpson, Stephanie Corkhill Hyles and Lynne Tinley are exhibiting new work at Bungendore Woodworks. All six artists hope to create an emotional response in the viewer. Kings Highway, Bungendore from  June 28 – July 28.


MEGALO is holding a fundraiser for a small screen print setup for eKhaya eKasi Art & Education Center to benefit the Khayelitsha community in Capetown, which runs programs targeting illiteracy, unemployment, poverty, the AIDS epidemic, and lack of social services. You can join in and draw an image on a plate, wheel it through a press and pull a print, you can buy a print donated by Megalo members, or you can buy works on paper by to artists like Alison Alder, GW Bot, Marie Hagerty, Nicci Haynes, John Loane, Wittamon Niwattichai, Mike Parr, Patsy Payne, Ron McBurnie Franki Sparke and more. 10 – 4pm this Saturday June 28, 21 Wentworth Avenue. At 2pm the South African High Commissioner, Ms Koleka Mqulwana, will speak.

BELCONNEN Arts Centre’s now-famous Mid-Winter Market is running on Saturday, June 28 from noon to 5pm. Stall holders and artists from our region present their environmental, sustainable and unique artwork and products. For the first time the market will include stalls from ArtsAbility artists, a group created to support ACT artists experiencing disability and disadvantage. Musicians will be performing throughout the day and warm mulled wine, tea, coffee and Vietnamese food will be available. All welcome. , 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen.


LYNEHAM High School’s Performing Arts teacher John Batterham wrote his play “Moonflower” over two years while he was living in New Delhi. He’s staging the play right now at the school. Show times are 7pm Thursday and Friday June 26-7, and Saturday June 28 at 1:30pm and 7pm.

THE Brass Knuckle Brass Band claims it will to challenge the dubious claim that Canberra has no soul this Saturday night, June 28, at Transit Bar. When it joins forces with Sydney’s Beaten Bodies for the inaugural Funk Revue, which will feature an 8-piece line-up of horns and percussion, funk, hip-hop and New Orleans style tunes.

GALLERY@BCS “Respect” series presents: Daniel Image exhibition of painted works by Brett- David Carpenter and Daniel Dempsey Richards, running until July 4 at  Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Court, Belconnen, 9am-4:30pm Monday-Friday.  Both are young Aboriginal men in their final year of studies in Cultural Arts at CIT Yurauna Centre. Carpenter grew up on the South Coast surrounded by the beauty of the bush and the water of beaches, lakes and creeks while Dempsey-Richards was born in Mt Isa and has lived in Tumut and Canberra.


ELECTRIC Shadows Bookshop is launching a new book by Julian Cribb, “New Poisoned Planet,” tonight June 26 at 6pm. Cribb argues that we cannot rely on governments or industry to clean up our toxic messes: it’s up to us to repair our poisoned planet. All welcome to the launch at Shop 2, 40 Mort Street Braddon, where the bookshop’s famous cheese bikkies will be available free, along with the book at $29.99


AARWUN Gallery has its winter exhibition running from June 29 to July 22 at Shop 11, Federation Square  Nicholls. This year Melanie Miller and Jan Stapleton popular Sydney contemporary artists, present their latest bodies of work. Miller is known for her vibrant, textured abstracts, while Stapleton is known for her exceptional portrayals of the Pilbara, Lake Eyre, Cape York and the Kimberley.

ACT Organ School students are staging a concert tomorrow, Friday, June 27 from 5.30pm-7pm at Wesley Uniting Church in Forrest, where they will perform works prepared with Senior Teacher, Philip Swanton of the Sydney Conservatorium. Free admission. Bookings not required.


ALSO at Wesley, in the Music Centre, this Sunday, June 29 at 3pm, Art Song will stage “Sculpt Music from the Air” with Louise Page (soprano), Teresa Rabe (flute) and Phillipa Candy (piano) performing songs by Handel, Rodrigo, Corigliano and the song cycle Secrets by May Howlett. Admission includes a complimentary program and light refreshments. Tickets only at the door.

THE subtle work of Tim Johnson is still on show in  “Eye to Eye,”  at the new Nancy Sever Gallery, 6 Kennedy Street, Kingston, until July 6.


ADAM Broinowski was a 2013 Scholars and Artists in Residence Fellow at the National Film and Sound Archive looking at how the Australian perception of landscape has been informed and shaped by a legacy of mining culture since 1945. He’ll join with Peter White, the NFSA’s Senior Curator of Indigenous Connections to discuss his research from 5:30-6:30pm tomorrow, Friday June 27, free event.


DAS Zentrum, the very lively Australian-German Institute, is presenting Canberra historian Dr John Moses in a talk with the title “World War 1 – Whose War was it? The debate continues” at 7.30pm tomorrow Friday June 27, at Das Zentrum headquarters in the Griffin Centre, (First Floor) 20 Genge Street, Civic. Dr Moses has published widely especially in German historiography.

ANCA Gallery presents I Heart Video Art, an exhibition of local video art with heart by ten Canberra-based artists: Alexander Boynes, Nicci Haynes, Caroline Huf, Ellis Hutch, Janice Kuczkowski, Blaide Lallemand, Heike Qualitz, Dan Vukovljak, Danny Wild and Amelia Zaraftis.   The artists exploit many of the virtues of video, including its ability to capture the movement of the human figure and performance, present observations about modern life, and combine visuals with sound.   At ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place Dickson until July 6, 5pm-8pm Wednesday to Sunday.


WE like the sound of this one. The National Portrait Gallery has waded thought the fog to urge us all to “resist the temptation to hibernate.” They’ll have warming winter drinks at ‘Follow-up Friday’, tomorrow Friday June 27, from 5pm, with a Piper-Heidsieck champagne bar, live music by Toggle and “real-life social networking.”
