ANOTHER 15 LED display screens will be installed over coming weeks at ACTION bus stations and selected major bus stops as part of the roll out of the NXTBUS real time system for ACTION Buses.

The 15 screens are being installed at Westfield Belconnen bus station, Cohen Street bus station, Australian National University bus stop, Barton bus stop, Belconnen community bus station, City West bus stop, Gungahlin bus station, Kippax bus stop, Tuggeranong bus station and Woden bus station.

Minister for Transport Shane Rattenbury says the screens will display departure times including the route, destination, platform number as well as when the bus is equipped with a bike rack and if it is wheelchair accessible.

“Live times are shown in minutes until the bus departs, for example 5 minutes,” he says.

“Routes with buses not yet installed with NXTBUS technology will show scheduled timetable information in 24 hour time (for example 17:05) on the screen. At the completion of the project all departures will be shown live.

“All LED display screens will be accompanied by push button, on demand audio announcement and in the coming months, be equipped with hearing loop functionally to assist hearing and vision impaired commuters.”

Additional funding of $190,000 has been provided in the 2013/14 financial year for four more LED display screens. These screens will be installed in mid-2014 in the City Bus Station to complement the two installed there last year and will take the total number of screens across the ACT to 21.

“The next stage will see the roll out of the NXTBUS web interface that allows commuters to search all stops in the ACT, as well as four touch screen kiosks at the Westfield Belconnen, City, Tuggeranong and Woden bus stations,” Mr Rattenbury says.

“The progressive roll-out approach is similar to what other projects, such as iBus in London, have undertaken and ensures normal services continue to be delivered with minimal disruption.

NXTBUS will track ACTION buses and provide live information about departure times via digital displays at bus stations and major stops, online, via SMS and by telephone.
