Docos re-live the Centenary

JUST when Canberrans thought the Centenary celebrations might be over, news is to hand that the “Centenary of Canberra – short Documentaries” will be screened at the “Art Not Apart” festival this weekend.

According to Annette Hurda, project manager for “Documenting the Commissions,” the documentaries, each about 10 minutes long, have never been seen by the public before now and take a creative, quirky and fun look at the artistic journey behind the events commissioned by the Centenary and hand-picked by its creative director, Robyn Archer.

These are the result of a community project, sponsored by the Centenary of Canberra, which asked ScreenACT to choose and encourage the documentary makers as part of “building screen capacity in the ACT”.

The mentors for the project were Andrew Pike, director of Ronin Films, and James Lane, film and digital editor.

The documentaries are as follows:

ROB Nugent’s “City of Trees,” following artist, Jyll Bradley, as she creates soundscapes and photos of people who love their trees in Canberra and also “One River,” a look at the “One River” projects and what it has meant to the different artists and communities along its banks.

KRIS Kerehona’s “Hit the Floor together,” a look at how teenagers come together in a performance by QL2 and also “Canberra Pursuit,” in which hundreds of bicycles are converted into moving music instruments, created from an idea by conductor Jon Rose; Daniel Sanguineti’s “Training Squad” a look at Art versus sport and also “Home,” interviews with three communities from Canberra that put their ideas of what HOME meant to them into the “One very Big Day” festival.

JONO White’s “CAPITheticAL“- a look at the architectural prize given to an alternate possibility, today, of what Walter Burley Griffin may have gone through.

EMILY Hungerford’s “SPIN wear”, is a look at glamorous car parts as fashion in the lead up to the SPIN weekend October 2013.

HUMPRHEY James’s “SPIN Saturday,” a look at all the action behind the day of SPIN at the TAMS Depot in Fyshwick, in October 2013.

ALICE Taylor’s “From a Black Sky”, the endeavours behind the opera inspired by the backdrop of the Canberra Bushfires and premiered at The Street Theatre in 2013.
