Elections ACT finds 20 problems with the Electoral Act

ACT Legislative Assembly

THE ACT Electoral Commission has issued a special report making a swag of recommendations to the Legislative Assembly which the Commission views are needed for the Electoral Act to be legal, constitutional and fair.

“The report contains a response to the Voting Matters report released earlier this year by the Legislative Assembly Select Committee on Amendments to the Electoral Act 1992. In addition, the report discusses further issues related to the operation of the ACT’s campaign finance reforms following major changes to disclosure laws that commenced on 1 July 2012. The report makes 20 recommendations for consideration by the Assembly,” ACT Electoral Commissioner, Phillip Green said.

“Under new arrangements that commenced on 1 July 2014 that established the Electoral Commission members as officers of the Legislative Assembly, this special report was presented to the Speaker of the Assembly for tabling. The Attorney General is required to provide a written response to the report to the Assembly within 3 months after the day the report was tabled.”

Fortunately we still have two years to get it right.
