Electricity outages ‘important’ in heatwave: ActewAGL

ELECTRICITY outages across Canberra in heatwave conditions are “necessary,” according to ActewAGL.

The  outages, which affected several suburbs across Canberra this week and are scheduled again for tomorrow, have left some residents temporarily without power as temperatures climb towards 38 degrees.

Outages will affect a further six suburbs tomorrow, and residents should have received written notice at least four business days in advance according to an ActewAGL spokesperson.

In a media release today, ActewAGL’s Acting Chief Executive Officer John Knox said the outages were “so important”.

“If we don’t continue our maintenance program it could create much bigger problems, such as risks to public safety and longer unplanned outages that could impact more customers,” Knox said.

ActewAGL completed five planned electricity interruptions across Canberra yesterday, impacting 160 homes, with an average outage length of 3.5 hours. Four homes were affected by interruptions today, and were completed by midday.

“We are doing everything we can to further minimise any inconvenience as a result of planned electricity interruptions,” says Knox.

“Our field crews are starting work earlier some as early as 5.30am to get the work done before the hottest part of the day and we’ve also allocated additional field crews to complete the planned maintenance work. In saying this we are always very mindful of the safety of our field crews.”

ActewAGL will continue to post updates on planned electricity interruptions.
