JOY Burch says all senior secondary students in the ACT will be required to complete an English subject from next year following the first major review of the Year 12 Certificate in three decades, Minister for Education and Training Joy Burch announced today.

Ms Burch last year asked the Board of Senior Secondary Studies to review the Certificate, with a particular focus on whether English and mathematics should be compulsory to Year 12.

“When I speak to parents and employers, most are surprised to discover that English is not compulsory for our senior students,” Joy said.

“I am pleased that the Board has determined that, starting with our Year 11 students next year, all students should complete a course under the English Course Framework as a requirement of receiving a Year 12 Certificate.

“The skills learned in our range of English courses are vital for students. The community, and particularly employers, expects our students to be competent in reading and writing.

“Our students are competing nationally and internationally for jobs or places in further education and training. Studying English will ensure they have these vital skills which will enhance their opportunities.

“The Board also strongly recommended students complete a Mathematics course as part of their ACT Year 12 Certificate. This is also important for our students’ futures.”

Other recommendations include increasing the minimum number of courses required to receive an ACT Year 12 Certificate, and issuing students with a testamur (certificate of graduation) as well as an academic transcript.

“The Board will now review the Year 12 Certificate every five years. I would like to thank it for its work on this review, including the consultation with stakeholder groups.”
