Environmental open houses moving to a monthly program

Local community group SEE-Change, in collaboration with ACTSmart, the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects and the organisers of Sustainable House Day, have extended the ‘open house day’ from once a year to once a month.

The first home in this tour will be open on Sunday 22 June between 2-4pm in O’Connor.

“Since around 2009 SEE-Change has been running ‘over the back fence’ tours, where members open their homes and gardens to the public to share their lessons learnt and the actions they have taken to reduce their ecological footprint,” said SEE-Change Executive Officer Jodie Pipkorn.

“This year we have chosen to do things a bit differently and bring together all of the different house tours into one program, so that Canberran’s have the opportunity to visit at least one sustainable house each month.”

Sustainable House Day started in 2001 as an initiative of the Australian Solar Council (then known as the Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES).

Over 200 homes opened their doors to over 40,000 people on Sunday 9 September 2012 as millions of Australians continue to embrace renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to lessen our impact on the environment.

“These house tours will enable renovators, home owners and home buyers to be inspired and informed about sustainable actions they could be taking in and around their home at all times of the year, particularly at the times when they want it most,” Jodie said.

“And as an added bonus, many of the houses will have ACTSmart experts on hand to answer energy, water or waste questions of visitors”.

Details and dates about the houses are at www.see-change.org.au/house-tours. To get location details about the houses rsvp to event@see-change.org.au.

If you have a sustainable house you would like to open for sustainable house day on either the 7 or 14 September this year, or during any other month, please contact SEE-Change.
