police

LAST night (August 19) ACT Policing arrested a 62-year-old man of no fixed abode after several incidents of public amenities being defaced with faeces in John Knight Park, Belconnen.

Throughout August, several incidents of property damage were reported by Territory and Municipal Services staff to ACT Policing. All incidents involved faeces smeared across public amenities in John Knight Park, Belconnen, including adult exercise equipment, children’s play equipment and park benches. All incidents occurred during hours of darkness and some occurred on consecutive nights.

Territory and Municipal Services took all necessary measures to clean the affected public amenities with specialist equipment on each occasion.

About 11.15pm last night, members of Belconnen Patrol located a male in the John Knight Park acting suspiciously near the adult fitness area. Police approached the area and discovered faeces and urine on a bench near the equipment.

The 62-year-old man was then transported to Belconnen Police Station. He was later charged with defacing property.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court later this morning.
