Fire extinguished at Belconnen High

FIREFIGHTERS have extinguished a fire from an electrical switchboard at the Belconnen High School, Murranji Street, Hawker.

ACT Fire & Rescue has evacuated approximately 450 staff and students as a precaution.

Crews are currently clearing smoke from the area and conducting ventilation operations before allowing staff and students to return to the area.

Three fire pumpers are on scene along with the Hazardous Material Unit, the Breathing Apparatus Van and one Commander.

Damage is minimal and there are no injuries.

ACT Fire & Rescue are about to depart the scene.

Technicians will remain on-scene to carry out repairs to rectify power back to the school.

Cause has been identified as a malfunction in the electrical system.

Staff and students remain in the school gymnasium pending reinstallation of the power.

The ACT Education and Training Directorate advises school is back tomorrow:

Following an electrical fire in a switchboard at Belconnen High School earlier today, the ACT Education and Training Directorate can advise that classes will resume as normal tomorrow (Tuesday 19 August 2014).
