Four shops stung by fake $100 notes

Fake $100 notes were spent spent with at least four shops today, prompting a warning to other Canberra businesses.

Police-afp-cops-0021-175x175The fraudulent notes were passed off today at a coffee shop, DVD/video store and fishing tackle shop, all in Phillip, as well as a convenience store in the city.

Police say the fakes are of good quality and easily mistaken for legal tender, although they have some obvious features that set them apart from the real thing.

The fake notes are easily torn, and have a sticker where a real note would have a clear panel.

On all three occasions, two men made a purchase of $20 or less and paid with the counterfeit $100 note.

Police are looking for two persons of interest in relation to the matter, both men of Middle Eastern appearance, aged in their early to mid-20s. Both were wearing tracksuit pants, white shoes and hooded jumpers, one red and the other a dark colour.

Police have asked anyone who knows of these notes or who has taken possession of one to contact Police Operations immediately on 131-444.
