Why do you get on your bike? ANU wants to know

bicycles

STUDENTS from the Australian National University are working with Pedal Power to research the capital’s cyclists.

The project – which will form a part of the students’ Environmental Sciences degree – involves researching cycling organisations, an online survey and ‘face to face’ focus groups.

The students are keen to hear from current and previous Pedal Power members as well as cyclists who have never had any contact with the organisation.

“We are all passionate about the environment and about finding ways to avoid using up the planet’s increasingly scarce resources. What was really appealing about the Pedal Power project was that our research will be used to have a tangible and direct impact upon sustainable transport in the ACT, by encouraging more people to get on their bikes; whether they are commuting to work, going to the shops or just getting our for some fresh air and exercise. It’s an exciting opportunity to build up our own skills and learning while making a real difference,” said research student Jared Priestly.

“When the ANU Environmental Sciences department asked us to get involved in this project we jumped at the chance. Pedal Power exists to serve the cycling community of the ACT – and to encourage others to join that community. By learning directly from the public where we are doing well and where we can offer more, we can develop new and innovative ways to empower Canberran cyclists of all persuasions. The students have been great, and have really engaged with the project. It has been a pleasure to work with the next generation of environmental ambassadors,” said Executive Officer of Pedal Power John Armstrong.

Anyone wishing to take part in the survey can complete it online at: http://goo.gl/forms/JpAgNh0pLL. The students will also be at Pedal Power’s Ride2Work breakfast event on Allara Street (opposite the Crowne Plaza Hotel) from 7am – 9am on October 15th with their clipboards to quiz the cyclists there, as well as the ANU Ride2Work event on the same morning at Union Square. They are also keen to hear from ex-Pedal Power members to attend their focus group – anyone interested can contact the Project Co-Ordinator Lilia on: u4854473@anu.edu.au
