Hawkins and Owen perform ‘The Three Bs’

THE next concert for the Wesley Music Centre Lunchtime Live series, from 12.40 to 1.20pm tomorrow, May 14, will see violist Alexina Hawkins join pianist Meriel Owen performing works by The Three Bs – Bach, Bartok and Brahms.

The works on the program are J. S. Bach’s “Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 for solo violin”, BWV 1004 B. Bartók’s “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, Sz. 120, BB 128 (movement 1) and J. Brahms’ “Sonata in E flat”, Op. 120, No. 2.

Hawkins, who studied with Tor Fromyhr at the ANU School of Music and for the past two years held a scholarship at the Australian National Academy of Music, went in March with her flute, viola and harp trio Petrichor to be mentored in Berlin by violist William Coleman. In August and September they will take up a residency at the Centre Intermondes in La Rochelle, France and Hawkins has also been invited to perform in the 2014 Bang On A Can Summer Festival in Boston.

She says of tomorrow’s repertoire, “I think these pieces are of the most eloquent and sincere music you can hear in life! Having spent a month in Germany recently, studying with my trio and attending concerts, I’ve been very interested in contemplating the writing of these composers (all German) from very different times in history.”

Owen, of course, enjoys a versatile musical life in Canberra and is in huge demand as a pianist and harpist.

Viola Concert, Wesley Music Centre, 20 National Circuit, Forrest, Wednesday, May 14, 12:40pm to 1:20pm, Entry $5 minimum, concession $2. No bookings required. Tickets at the door.
