The Hindu claims victory over our National Gallery

Shiva the lord of the dance

INDIAN newspaper The Hindu is celebrating the capitulation of Canberra’s National Gallery in the long running fight for ownership of a bronze statue of Shiva.

“The NGA, Australia’s foremost art institution located in the national capital of Canberra, had 30 days to claim its ownership of the imposing bronze Nataraja after receiving a notice from the Australian Attorney General’s Department under the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986. That deadline expired on April 26,” the paper said.

“The Attorney General’s Department said on Tuesday the NGA had not contested the March 26 notice, thus forfeiting the idol to the Australian government.”

Art dealer Subhash Kapoor, who sold the statue to the Gallery was arrested in 2012 and is currently on trial in the province of Tamil Nadu for many alleged thefts of artwork.

The NGA paid $5.6 million for the statue which will make for an interesting line item in their upcoming annual report.
