Holiday fun at the Gardens

THE Australian National Botanic Gardens turning on some fun for the kids with workshops during the school holidays.

The first, tomorrow Wednesday July 9, teaches young people how to make paper out of old jeans.

Paperworks Inc. will stage a workshop on to make paper and craft items from a range of fabrics and recycled materials.

“These workshops are fun, social and great for the environment,” says the Gardens’ Public Programs Officer Jennifer Salkeld.

In all Paperworks Inc. will be hosting four paper making workshops on July 9 and 16 at 11.00 am and 1.30 pm both days. Workshops run for approximately one and a half hours and cost $20 per person. Spaces are limited and online bookings are essential to anbg.gov.au/gardens/

Also during the holidays are the popular afterDARK tours, where visitors get to explore the Gardens at night and be guided through the illuminated Rainforest Gully and surrounding garden landscapes. To meet the huge demand the gardens are offering two special school holiday afterDARK tours on Friday July 11 and 18.

The school holiday afterDARK tours will take families on a night time journey through the Gardens after making their own lantern, becoming “human fireflies” as they discover some of the Gardens’ nocturnal life and secret plant stories.

The tours commence at 6.30 pm and are recommended for children over five years. Cost is $22.50 adult, $16.50 child and online bookings are essential to anbg.gov.au/gardens/
