Hospital statistics terrible according to Hanson

LIBERAL Leader Jeremy Hanson has been scathing of the ACT’s performance in the latest AIHW Hospital statistics.

“The AIHW report states that the percentage of patients whose ED visits were completed within four hours in 2013 was just 59.4. That’s well below the national average of nearly 71 percent,” Jeremy said.

“Unfortunately the story is similar for elective surgery waiting times. In the ACT we wait a median of 49 days for procedures, longer than any other state or territory. Patients are even forced to wait more than a year for some procedures.”

The shadow health minister does not think this represents good value for the billion dollar plus health budget of the ACT.

Chief Minister Gallagher on the other hand has found some good news in the numbers.

“While the focus of these reports is often on waiting times I am pleased to see that ACT public hospitals reported better than national average rates for hospital readmissions for appendectomies, cataract extractions and knee replacements. The ACT also reported a lower rate of falls resulting in harm than the national average,” Katy said.

“While there is still a lot of work to be done on reducing waiting times and meeting national benchmarks in public hospitals I am pleased to see that investment the ACT Government is making to reduce waiting times is starting to pay dividends and see the amount of people seen within benchmarks slowly increase.”
