Shane Rattenbury has announced government support for Apprentice House, a housing project providing affordable, short to medium term accommodation to first and second year building and construction apprentices.

“It can be difficult for apprentices working on the minimum wage to find safe and sustainable accommodation for the duration of their apprenticeships. Initiatives like Apprentice House are invaluable in providing secure, short-medium term accommodation for young apprentices starting their training,” Shane said.

“Apprentice House doesn’t just provide sustainable accommodation. The one off grant of $30,000 will be used to help the ACT Building and Construction Industry Association establish a Youth Engagement Officer who will provide live-in support and mentoring for residents living at Apprentice House.

“The Youth Engagement Officer will run programs with the young apprentices designed to develop practical independent living skills like managing a domestic budget and cooking nutritious meals.

“Ensuring apprentices have access to affordable, secure housing is critical to them successfully completing their training. Combined with the additional mentoring and support providing, I hope this program will make the transition from apprenticeship into the workforce smoother, and assist with apprentice retention.

Apprentice House has recently opened its doors to apprentices following construction of the new five bedroom home in Lyons which was funded by CHC Affordable Housing. Each apprentice has their own en-suite bedroom and private living space with access to shared living, dining and kitchen.
