Busted! Four seizures in one day for Canberra cops

IT was a case of ‘when it rains, it pours’ for the police yesterday when four unrelated search warrants related to separate investigations turned up a gun, fireworks, suspicious cash and two cannabis crops, along with other drugs and drug paraphernalia.

In one of the searches yesterday afternoon, detectives seized a 12-gauge double-barrelled shot gun from inside a vehicle, along with the appropriate ammunition and suspected methamphetamine, suspected steroids, cannabis seeds, drug paraphernalia and a sum of cash.

The warrant to search the vehicle related to the stabbing of a 27-year-old Kambah man at about 11.30pm last Saturday night, which happened at a house in Dunlop and left the victim in hospital recovering from multiple wounds to his chest and torso.

A 42-year-old Evatt woman will receive a summons to ACT Magistrates Court at a later date in relation to the items found inside the vehicle yesterday, and police continue to investigate the stabbing.

In another search, at about 7am yesterday, Woden police searched a home in Duffy and found four cannabis plants inside an elaborate hydroponic system, along with dried cannabis. A 40-year-old Duffy man will receive a summons to the ACT Magistrates Court over the matter at a later date.

Officers from Belconnen searched a house in Holt at about 1.30pm, based on information from the public, and found four mature cannabis plants, dry cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

During the search, police also removed fireworks and various substances they suspected were used to manufacture drugs or explosives. The Bomb Response Team and an AFP chemist determined they were safe to handle. A 34-year-old Holt man will receive a summons to ACT Magistrates Court at a later date as a result of the search.

At 8pm, police went to investigate a report of two people breaking into a house in Ngunnawal, and instead found evidence of residents growing cannabis in a hydroponic system. This allowed detectives to return with a search warrant and seize seven cannabis plants as well as the hydroponic equipment. Investigations into the matter continue.

Acting Crime Manager, Detective Sergeant Steve Ladd said the four seizures were an “outstanding result” that demonstrated the effectiveness of the AFP’s intelligence-led approach to policing.
