Just when you thought the centenary was over we get a plant

AT Floriade Shane Rattenbury has launched a special commemorative plant and plant label in celebration of the Yarralumla Nursery’s centenary.

“Only a very special plant would be fit to commemorate an occasion such as the Yarralumla Nursery’s 100th birthday and the Myoporum parvifolium (Centenary Carpet) is a great representative,” Shane said.

“The Nursery was established in 1914 to propagate and supply plants for public landscaping and conduct research into plants suitable for the Canberra region and the Centenary Carpet is one of the plants it has successfully grown and propagated.

“Centenary Carpet is an evergreen plant that provides hardy ground cover. It was propagated to survive Canberra’s hot dry summers and severe winter frosts and has become one of the top selling species grown by the Nursery.

“Centenary Carpet will be available from garden centres across Canberra from tomorrow, so Canberrans can share in the celebration of the Nursery’s centenary by purchasing it for their own garden.”

Mr Rattenbury said the species is on display within the Yarralumla Nursery garden at Floriade.
