JUSTIN Monfries was not well loved in the community, having killed a nurse, Linda Cox, in a hit and run incident in the middle of a crime spree in 2012.
But his death on Wednesday comes as a shock.
The Canberra Times reports he died at Canberra Hospital of “a sudden medical condition” which struck at the prison.
Minister for Corrective Services Shane Rattenbury’s office has issued this statement:
I can confirm that the individual in question passed away on Wednesday 17 December 2014.
All deaths in custody are the subject of a coronial inquest as required by law. As such, I cannot make any comment about the death of this detainee while the matter remains the subject of that inquest.
A detainee’s health treatment is private medical information and is protected by the Health Records (Privacy and Access) Act 1997 and the Information Privacy Act 2014. As such, I cannot provide any comment on a detainee’s care other than to say that ACT Corrective Services provided every support in assisting ACT Health to care for this individual
