ACT Policing caught a Learner driver and their supervising licensed driver both impaired by alcohol while driving in Kambah last Thursday (May 22).

About 7.50pm, Tuggeranong Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on a silver Hyundai Excel sedan travelling on Athllon Drive, Kambah. A roadside breath test was conducted with the driver, a 20-year-old Rivett woman with a Learner driver’s license, who returned a positive result. The 45-year-old woman from Duffy, who was the supervising fully licensed driver, failed to provide a roadside breath screening. The driver and passenger had been travelling from Erindale to an address in Duffy.

Both the driver and supervising driver were transported to Tuggeranong Police Station for a breath analysis. The 20-year-old Learner driver returned a result of 0.051 and the 45-year-old supervising driver returned a result of 0.151 and was identified as a repeat impaired driving offender.

Traffic Operations Station Sergeant Rod Anderson said the incident showed disregard for the safety of other road users.

“A supervising driver holds the responsibility of instructing the learner driver. Doing so while impaired shows complete disregard for the safety of that learner driver and all other road users,” Sergeant Anderson said.

“Both Learner drivers and their supervising driver are subject to a blood alcohol concentration limit of zero in these circumstances. There is absolutely no excuse to drive or supervise a Learner driver while over that limit.”

The 20-year-old Rivett woman was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice. Both the driver and supervising driver will be summonsed to face to the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
