Last Tango in Queanbeyan

WHEN local cabaret artists Karen Strahan and Jill Walsh penned a number for their new musical, “Winging My Way to the Top,”  John Roy and Frank Lustri of Jayco in Queanbeyan had no idea they were about to be in showbiz.

But, as the assembled media discovered today in their Yass Road Jayco showroom, the musical, due to open at The Q in early May, features a comic song called “the Jayco Tango.”

It is a kind of an ode to the joys of caravanning, as Beryl  and Charlie Cheapside (Walsh and Gordon Nicholson) imagine the joys of travelling, Jayco-style, “ in a foreign place – like Cobargo!”

Nicholson, a well-known comedy actor, doubles as director of this original Australian musical comedy which deals with an Aussie family trying to find acceptance, respect and love through their aspirations to get into showbiz.

Another showstopper, which already has cabaret audiences  from Cootamundra to Merimbula humming along with to the tune is the title number, “Winging My Way to the Top” performed this morning by co-producer Strahan, who sang, “I like to keep a smile on my face.”

Cast member, blues singer Gaye Reid. told “Citynews” today that there were a few sad moments in the musical, which was, on the contrary, full of laughs.

“Winging My Way to the Top”  at The Q – Queanbeyan, May 8-17,  bookings to 6285 6290.
