Letters / Why so long, Katy?

WHY has it taken Katy Gallagher and her team so long to accept the major problems that have been obvious to most of us with regard to our poor hospital system?

quillThe “nursing changes” she is now incorporating were normal and expected practices in the past. Nursing was a respected profession where they worked as a team, patients’ needs came first and it was not “someone else’s job” to provide certain care and assistance.

Well done, Catherine

I AM writing to congratulate Catherine Carter on her wonderful piece titled “Work that’s never done” (CN, November 13).

I found her article inspiring and informative. Tonight, while my husband was watching TV and Kim Kardashian came on, I made him turn it off so I could read Catherine’s article to my 10 and 12-year-old daughters.

The women Catherine wrote about are the kind of role models I want for my daughters (as well as all the other successful businesswomen outlined further on in the issue) not the vacuous, self-absorbed likes of Ms KK. Keep more real, inspirational, everyday, hardworking citizens (who just so happen to be top Canberra women) coming!

Roman dates awry

SOME corrections need to be made to the reference to “Rome of 109-130 AD” if this paper wants to have a reputation of checking historical facts correctly (Lyn Mills’ social event of the week / “Scandalous Boy” opening night, CN, November 20).

Hadrian did not become Emperor until 117 AD. Until then Trajan was Emperor. Historical sources cite as Hadrian meeting Antinous in 123 or 124 AD.  Hadrian sent him to Rome in 125 AD and started to have a serious sexual relationship with him in 128 AD.  By then he was the Emperor’s favourite. He drowned in 130 AD.

So, if we want to have an accurate “history lesson” the period should be 123-130 AD.
