Louise Crossman to steer the ACT Labor ship

THE ACT Labor Party is letting us know they’ve elected a new leadership team.

More than 620 eligible members voted in person or by post with the vote concluding at the Woden Southern Cross Club on Saturday.

Current President Louise Crossman was elected for a two year term as ACT Labor President with Andrew Leigh adviser Thomas McMahon and local lawyer Jennifer Newman filling the Vice President positions.

The vote comes off the back of a reform process that was implemented at the 2014 Branch Conference.

“This was the first time that ACT Labor members were able to vote for their local party Presidents, this is part of a wider democratisation of the ALP which aims to give members more of a say” said Acting Branch Secretary Matt Byrne.

“To have such a large proportion of eligible members participate – about two thirds – shows that the party made the right decision to support these reforms” Mr Byrne said.

Newly elected President, Louise Crossman said she was honoured to have the support of the membership.

“The election provided an excellent chance to listen to what ACT Labor members want out of their party. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow the party and empower ACT Labor members,” Louise said.

“ACT Labor has seen massive membership growth over the last year. Opening up the president position to a branch member election has given us a chance to connect with some of our newest members in a direct and constructive way.”
