QUEANBEYAN Mayor Tim Overall has congratulated two Queanbeyan council workers who were heroes at a suburban house fire in Jerrabomberra earlier this week.

Adam Royal and Brett Williams from the Council’s water and sewer team where driving by the house on the corner of Brudenell and Bicentennial Drives at Jerrabomberra on Monday when they noticed what looked like dust over the house.

They stopped to investigate and immediately smelt the smoke. Realising it was a fire, Brett went to the front door and started banging on it and yelling out to any occupants, while Adam ran around the back yelling out ‘hello anyone home’.

A 12 year old boy who had been in the house came out and Adam and Brett put him in their truck and asked him if anyone else was in the house.

He told them his dog was around the back so Adam, braving the burning house and poor visibility, went around the back of the house where he found the dog hiding in its kennel.

He took the dog to the boy and then he and Brett went around the back of the house to fight the fire with the water from the council truck.

“The firies told us to keep going on it. We most definitely made a difference but the fire had already gotten into the ceiling,” said Adam.

Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said both men had shown courage and initiative. He said if it hadn’t been for the council workers the boy may have continued to try and fight the fire in the house by himself.

“I’m very impressed by this act of selflessness. Adam has been burnt in a kitchen fire before, so it took special courage indeed.”
