McKellar house fire

ACT Fire & Rescue is responding to reports of a house fire in Moses Place McKellar.

Update to follow.

9:40 AM


ACT Fire & Rescue received multiple emergency triple zero (000) calls from 9:34am.

Multiple fire crews are on scene and have commenced work to extinguish the fire.

9:48 AM


The house is fully engulfed in fire and part of the roof has just collapsed forcing firefighters to retreat from the property.

Firefighters are also being prevented from accessing the rear of the building for firefighting by a large distressed pit bull terrier dog.

The property, a semi detached single level unit has been completely destroyed.

Firefighters are continuing to work on extinguishing the blaze.

Animal handlers have been called to the scene to look after the dog.

10:05 AM


The fire has been extinguished. One fire pumper has just been released from the scene.

Two fire pumpers, the breathing apparatus van and commander are still on scene.

Remaining crews now dampening down hot spots before undertaking a search of the property.

It’s believed no one was inside the building.

The initial damage bill has been estimated at $350,000.

The pit bull terrier dog entered the burning property forcing firefighters to go inside to rescue it.

Animal welfare officers have arrived on scene and are taking care of the dog.
