Moments of pathos: ‘Steel Magnolias’

THE seventh production for REP’s 2013-14 (its 81st) season is Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias”,  one of the stayers in the modern theatre.

Opening tomorrow February 14, although it’s  not exactly St Valentines’ Day fare, the production continues until March 1 at Theatre 3 in Acton.

This is the first directing role for Jordan Best, who always brings new insights to her productions.

Set in the Deep South, the play, which is full of moments of great pathos, takes us into  Truvy’s hairdressing salon and gives actors (mostly female)  a chance to try their hand at the accents.

Rep is obviously having fun, announcing, “good hair and beauty and even better gossip is the main attraction for six strong Southern women, preparing to face the world.”

Regarding the all-important subject of hair, we are intrigued to see that the hair design and mentoring is by Charles Oliver, Canberra’s hairdresser to the stars.

“Steel Magnolias,” Canberra Repertory at Theatre 3, 8pm, February 14  –March 1, Wednesday to Saturday, matinees at 2pm, February 22 & 23 & March 1, bookings to 6257 1950,  10-4 Monday to Friday, or  canberrarep.org.au
