COMEDIAN Dayne Rathbone and his brother Clyde perform their brand new comedy play “It’s Me Mandela” at The Playhouse this Saturday July 5 at 8pm. Since starting his comedy career in Canberra (of all places) in 2010, South African immigrant Dayne has gone on to national and international success. Making his acting debut is ACT Brumby (and former Wallaby) rugby player, Clyde Rathbone. Proceeds go to two African charities, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Funda Nenja. BRILLIANT Argentine-born concert pianist Marcela Fiorillo is also a distinguished teacher. At 4pm tomorrow, Friday July 4, at 6.30pm her piano student Johanna Chia, Iris Bian, Heiman Mak, Ingrid Zhang, Aaron Choy, Lachlan Tang, Sheena Kan, Crystal Choy, Daniel Nguyen, Nicole Wang, Christine Thompson, Giselle Roberts, Sharon Robinson, Tristan Struve and Andrew Rumsey, will be performing Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, Kabalewsky, Albeniz, Guastavino and others at Wesley Music Centre in Forrest. RUNNING from July 4 to August 10 at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery in Kingsley St Acton is “Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook: Storytellers of the Town,” the first major solo exhibition to be held in Australia by Thai artist Rasdjarmrearnsook. Her work is concerned with fundamental ideas of life and death, history and fate, the tragic limitations and absurd failures of communication, and the reconfigurations of self through a succession of artistic displacements.

THE exhibition “Fowl Play” at Canberra Contemporary Art Space in Furneaux Street, Manuka, until Sunday July 6 explores relationships between the domestic hen and society. Painter Janet Angus hopes it will lead to a better understanding of our feathered friends.

MEANTIME at CCAS in Gorman House Braddon until August 9, Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm, curator Debra Porch’s exhibition “Intimate Spaces Revealed” looks at “the feeling of a close personal association of the deepest nature” in works by Caitlin Franzmann, Carol McGregor and Leena Riethmuller.

FRIDAY is obviously a big day at CCAS Gorman House, as the gallery also launches “Art of Seduction” works by Natalie Randall, Samuel Townsend and Christopher Twiney. Art that is “seductive” is often spoken about as if it’s a bad thing, but CCAS and curator/director David Broker beg to differ. The show runs to August 9, Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm.

TUGGERANONG Arts Centre will today launch two new exhibitions, “and I stopped” by Mariana del Castillo and “More Than a Body: Organic Perception” by Fredrika Rose, winners respectively of the 2013 “LAKESIDE” Award and the 2013 Emerging Artist Support Scheme prize. The joint opening will take place today, Thursday, July 3, at 6pm, and be officiated by Member for Canberra Ms Gai Brodtman MP. It will also include a speech by artist G W Bot. The shows run until August 2 in Gallery 2.

AT Watson Arts Centre,  from today until July 20, you can see ceramics by selected 2013 ANU School of Art graduates, Julie Barnett, David Lea, Fran Romano and Tanya Roberts. USING a range of clips from the National Film and Sound Archive collection, Anne Pender, will be at the NFSA Theatrette tomorrow Friday July 4 at 5.30pm to illustrate the extraordinary contribution made by various actors to television in its first 20 years, highlighting the work of Ron Haddrick, Nick Tate, June Salter, Garry McDonald, Kate Fitzpatrick, Helen Morse and others. Pender is an Associate Professor at the School of Arts, University of New England.


GEOFFREY Dunn’s solo exhibition of new photographic work entitled “Zoologica,” a collection of 12 monochromatic prints, it is a photographic study of life through death exploring zoological specimens. At Kaori Gallery, Corner London Circuit, Hobart Place, Canberra City until August 2.


NAIDOC week is up and running at Belconnen Arts Centre. From 3pm to 5pm this Friday you can hear stories from the creative frontline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture in the ACT region. Featuring arts and cultural professionals Duncan Smith (Wiradjuri Echoes), Linda Huddleston (Burrunju Gallery), Jo Donovan (Bandu Catering) and Michael Weir (Stik n Move) in conversation with Cara Kirkwood (Indigenous Program at National Gallery of Australia). Free, including afternoon tea by Bandu Catering.

All the while, in the Arts Lounge is a show about Price’s Café, one of the few places on the south coast where the Aboriginal community was supported and made welcome in 1950s Australia.
