NSW Government comes to Queanbeyan’s Mr Fluffy party

loose fill asbestos

QUEANBEYAN Mayor Tim Overall has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of an independent investigation into loose-fill asbestos.

Mayor Overall said the Government’s move to appoint an independent specialist to work with the NSW Heads of Asbestos Coordination Authorities (HACA) to establish the scope of properties impacted was a step in the right direction.

“This is a most welcomed announcement from the NSW Government and I am hopeful that this investigation and appointment of an independent specialist will identify all of the properties in Queanbeyan that may have had loose-fill asbestos installed in the 1960’s and 1970s,” Tim said.

“I look forward to seeing the detail of how the identification service will work so that information can be distributed to residents as soon as possible.

“Identification of these premises is a step in the right direction and I will continue to discuss with both State and Federal representations what steps can be taken for remediation of the affected properties.

“Council is aware of 11 properties in the Local Government Area that have loose-fill asbestos installed, however anything beyond that is currently unknown.”

NSW Minister for Finance and Services Dominic Perrottet said a free testing service will be offered to residents in the 14 local government areas, for any suspected loose-fill asbestos from homes built prior to 1980, for a 12 month period.

Advice on managing asbestos insulation is available on the WorkCover website at www.workcover.nsw.gov.au or call 13 10 50.”
