Opera at Lake George

THE Glenn Murcutt-designed barrel room at Lerida Estate Winery on Lake George will come alive to the sound of opera this weekend.

The program will include excerpts from “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Misérables” and “Sweeney Todd”, arias from “La Boheme”, “La Traviata” and “Porgy and Bess”, the Drinking Song from “Das Betelstudent”, and “Con Te Partiro”.

Two well-known operatic artists, soprano Sarahlouise Owens and bass and Damian Whiteley will be accompanied by pianist Natalia Tkachenko as they perform among the wine barrels.

Owens is a graduate of the ANU School of Music and Royal Northern College of Music Manchester, while Whiteley studied at the University of Sydney, RNCM & IOS at Opernhaus Zürich. Tkachenko graduated with honours from the Moscow State Institute of Music and has performed in Moscow South Korea, France and Germany. She now works in Canberra as an accompanist and teacher.

The event is being presented as part of The Poacher’s Way 2014 Summerside Festival, and Weereewa – A Festival of Lake George. Canapés and fine wine will be served in the courtyard during interval at the event, which is a fundraiser for UN Women’s Committee Program.

Opera at Lerida, 4 to 7 PM, Saturday February 22 at Lerida Estate on the Federal Highway at Lake George. Bookings essential to  6295 6640. $60 per head. Price includes the concert as well as canapés and Lerida Estate wine.
