Passionate love of oils at the Yarralumla Gallery

AN exhibition which opened on the weekend at the Yarralumla Gallery to an enthusiastic crowd confirms the locations of this exhibiting space to members of Canberra’s painting community.

Veteran Canberra artist, Sandra House, launched a mixed exhibition of the paintings, focusing (though not exclusively) on three escapes and river or coastal views.

Spread over several rooms, the spaces allow her to vary her focus, with one room largely containing very small paintings and one of the miniatures in which House excels.

As well, she says, the Gallery, located within a very busy coffee shop near the nursery in Weston, attracts a considerable number of passers-by, who stop to look at the art.

Originally trained in Victoria, House has been painting predominately in oils for over 40 years and has spoken of her love of this medium, evident in the subtle brushwork of her paintings.

A member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists, Sherbrooke Art Society, and Art in Miniature, the Artists Society of Canberra and Queanbeyan Art Society, House’s focus is on readily recognisable places she has visited, including several parts of Tasmania, recorded in painting after a recent artistic trip south.

House maintains that landscapes, farmhouses, forest scenes and seascapes are among favourite subjects, but that her grandchildren often feature, as well as sheep and cattle dogs. In this exhibition, however, she has also turned her attention to a famous Canberra building – the Carillon.

Oil paintings by Sandra House, at the Yarralumla Gallery and Oaks Brasserie, Cottage 1/Weston Park Rd, Yarralumla, daily from 10am to 5pm, until May 8.
