Prime Minister Tony Abbott made the announcement at Parliament House this afternoon.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says General Cosgrove is a “distinguished Australian” well-known to Canberrans from his many years of service in the Australian Defence Force.

“I hope that General Cosgrove will continue to enjoy residing here in Canberra and interacting closely with the ACT community,” Ms Gallagher says.

Ms Gallagher also paid tribute to outgoing Governor-General Quentin Bryce, whose term ends in March.

“I would like to thank Her Excellency Quentin Bryce for her service to Australia and the people of the ACT during her term as Governor-General and wish her well for the future,” the Chief Minister said.

“Her Excellency Ms Bryce made a significant contribution to Canberra, especially during the recent centenary celebrations and was always generous with her time during the popular Government House open days. I look forward to seeing this strong relationship between the ACT community and the Governor-General continue and wish General Cosgrove the best for his time in this role.”

General Cosgrove, 66, is married with three children. He served as chief of the Defence Force from 2002 until his retirement from active service in 2005.
