Planning approval to bulldoze the ABC flats

ABC flats

SIMON Corbell has announced planning approval to re-develop the eyesore flats bordering Civic along Cooyong Street.

“A variation to the Territory Plan commenced today that will allow large scale revitalisation of aging public housing stock in Braddon and Reid,” Simon Corbell said.

“This planning change means the ACT Government can begin preparation for an innovative new development with sustainable social, economic and environmental outcomes for the community.

“The variation contains a reduction in the building height to 12 storeys from the original 15 proposed, and the bulk and scale of buildings should not have a negative impact on nearby residents.

“Most of the land subject to the variation is occupied by public housing including Allawah Court, Currong Apartments and Bega Court (Section 52 Braddon and Section 7 Reid) with the remainder of the land occupied by organisations linked to the Catholic Church (Section 57 Braddon).”

One Response to Planning approval to bulldoze the ABC flats

Chris says: 5 April 2014 at 4:13 pm

The ABC Flats are only an “eyesore” because of a deliberate lack of maintenance and failure to enforce tenancy agreement requirements prohibiting furniture and other unsightly storage on verandahs together with the building of canvas roofs and other extensions over courtyards and verandahs. Not long ago the buildings were repainted and their surroundings redesigned and renovated and the flats airconditioned. It has been estimated that the taxpayers will be subsidising this new redevelopment by at least $50M in order to rehouse the evicted tenants, over and above the amount earned by selling the site to developers.
