‘Poppins’ gets a director

“MARY Poppins the Musical” has a director, Free Rain Theatre Company has announced.

Stephen Colyer, a multi-skilled director, actor and dancer, is a graduate of UNSW, The Victorian College of the Arts, The Australian Ballet School and The National Institute of Dramatic Art will head up the team of creatives for the 2015 production of the Disney musical.

Colyer is no novice. Widely admired as  stage director of production like “Falsettos,” he recently worked as dance supervisor and choreographer for “Dance Academy” on ABC TV. He has also worked as resident director on “Dirty Dancing,” “The Full Monty The Musical,” “The Rocky Horror Show” and “The Gruffalo.” He also directed “Cabaret” in Madrid, Seoul and Paris on behalf of Sam Mendes.

He has also staged works for the Darlinghurst Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre and The New Theatre, as well as acting in films and stage shows and performing with the Australian Ballet Company, The Royal Ballet of Flanders and Feld Ballet NY, and Opera Australia.

For the production, which will run from March 13-29 2015, the associate director will be Cate Clelland, musical director Ian McLean and choreographer Jacqui Richards.
