Queanbeyan Council to withhold amenity if citizens don’t get walking

QUEANBEYAN City Council is offering to install a new water fountain, but only if sufficient numbers of Queanbeyanites sign up for the 10,000 steps challenge.

“Over 100 people have now signed up for the 10,000 Steps Challenge and I’m quite sure with this level of support Queanbeyan will be a fitter town at the end of a fortnight, and also the proud owner of a new water bubbler in the CBD” Mayor Tim Overall said.

“CityNews” was intrigued by this approach to urban planning and approached the Council for more detail on the linkage between the fountain and participation in the walking program.

“Queanbeyan Steps Up is part of Queanbeyan Council’s 10,000 step program. This program is designed to encourage the local community to increase the amount of walking they do in their day. To encourage the Queanbeyan community to take part in the 10,000 step program, we have launched this challenge and have offered a community reward – the new drinking fountain. Installing another drinking fountain in the local area will assist walkers when they are out and about each day. The water fountains also have a dog bowl facility to encourage more people to take their dogs for a walk each day. Installing the water fountain is in line with the Council’s sustainability policy of encouraging people to use reusable water bottles and water bubblers,” a spokesperson said.
