Queanbeyan starts planning their sewage upgrade

molonglo river

CANBERRANS long concerned that heavy rain over Queanbeyan can cause a flow of effluent from the jewel of the Molonglo into our Lake Burley Griffin will be thrilled to hear plans are afoot to upgrade their facilities.

Happily the 1930s era facility is being completely replaced to take advantage of the latest technologies.

“The upgrade of the Queanbeyan Sewage Treatment Plant is a tremendously important project for the city,” Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said.

“The current Treatment Plant, while still producing high quality effluent, is very old and in need of an upgrade.

“This is a long term project, with construction not expected until at least 2018-19. Significant planning will be required over the coming years to ensure the upgraded Sewage Treatment Plant meets a range of regulations.”

Funding, however, has yet to be secured for the project estimated to cost $66 million.
