LAST night, “CityNews” dropped in on RAW Canberra’s second showcase for this year at the Uni Pub in Civic, transformed beyond belief into a kind of living market for artists staged over several floors of the building.
Theoretically the second floor was the location for artworks, but in fact they ranged over all floors. The third floor place was designated “the place where you could chill-out,” but there were bars on all floors.
It is true that the fourth floor was the space of fashion parade, music from Ben Bronte, The Naddiks and others, and performances like one from by ex-Cirque du Soleil artist Susi.
RAW can justly boast that in STAGING “Revolution”, it brought together emerging artists spanning genres including fashion, music, visual and performing arts, film and more for a one night extravaganza.
As well, this edition of RAW proved cross-generational, as both artists and visitors well beyond the 30+ mentioned in the promotion packed in to drink, eat and buy.
Up on the podium on floor four, artists (this was the chance) mostly unused to facing crowds of the media spoke about their work. One of them said we could biy one of her artworks for $30, pretty reasonable. Judging by what was on show.
And indeed RAW’s mission to “provide independent artists of all creative genres, with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity” was on show, photographs, paintings, video art, food-art and even skeins of silk were there to be admired and touched.
The higher you got, – floorwise that is – the more fashionable the patrons, some rendering their own bodies into heavily decorated works of art.
There is an international mission for RAW too, as it connects artists and hosts events in 80+ cities across the globe.
