Rumble in the Seussian jungle

IT’S something of a rumble in the Jungle of Nool over at Trinity Christian School this week as students prepare for a production of “Seussical, the musical” at Erindale Theatre.

But while, as the photographs show, it’s a lot of fun, Creative and Performing Arts Coordinator,  Alison Evans, has been quick to assure “City News” that it’s “not just about learning how to perform, underneath it all they are learning and developing life skills about patience, teamwork, persistence and encouragement of others to nurture character.”

According to Evans, who is also musical director, this Broadway show is based on the “remarkable and outlandish stories by Dr Seuss.” In her view, the show “isn’t just for children; teenagers and adults will also be drawn into the upbeat music and fun and adventurous storyline.”

She explained that the musical will take the audience to locations like Whoville and the Jungle of Nool while using songs and sets to stir up the imagination of all audience members. Everyone will enjoy the songs, wacky Seussical inspired costumes, the beautiful harmonies and comical acting.

The cast and crew of over 80 students from Trinity have been working on the production since October with over 100 hours of rehearsal.

The actors are students from Year 5 to Year 12 at the school. Lydia Walters from Year 5, for instance, takes one of the lead roles as Jojo, the little boy with a big imagination. Lydia says, “playing the part of Jojo is exciting! I’m looking forward to performing the musical and I hope everyone enjoys it.”

The most a notorious character in the show is of course the Cat in the Hat, is played by Carly Wilson in her second lead role – she played the narrator in “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” two years back.  “My character guides the audience on an adventure through the Jungle of Nool, to the Circus McGurkus and to the invisible world of the Whos,” says Carly. “Together, the other main characters like Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz and Mayzie McFuzz, and the rest of cast take the audience on a ride into a whole different world!”

The story centres around the lovable and charitable elephant Horton, who  protects his tiny friend Jojo and also guards the egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.

Need we say that the show has a happy ending? Yes, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community emerge triumphant.

“Seussical, the musical” at Erindale Theatre, April 30 – May 3, bookings to trybooking.com/BFID  or ring the school on 6231-4177.
