Simon says no risk to human health in Hume

SIMON Corbell has put on his environment minister hat to re-assure us all that following recent re-testing the former Koppers Logs plant site in Hume is still safe.

“There has been much discussion about this site over the past week and the Environment Protection Authority has conducted urgent testing to further reassure the community that previous testing remains accurate,” Mr Corbell said.

“An independent, nationally accredited laboratory, ALS Environmental, has analysed a groundwater water sample taken on 21 March 2014, from the remaining off-site location and has reconfirmed that Chromium VI was not evident. All other readings were also below the limits set for the appropriate land use under national guidelines and within normal ACT background concentrations.

“The site was comprehensively tested by independent consultants after the decommissioning of the site in 2005. These tests were further reviewed by an EPA accredited independent contaminated land auditor. All tests indicate that the site is suitable for ongoing industrial use, and poses no off-site risk to the environment or human health. Offsite testing on neighbouring properties in 2008 and 2011 confirmed those results.”

The test results are available online.
