Simon v The Stench

SIMON Corbell says the Environment Protection Authority is developing guidelines to help developers and planners prevent industrial air emissions from adversely affecting sensitive land uses such as residences.

“The Draft Separation Distance Guidelines for Air Emissions are available for community and industry stakeholder comment until December 16,” Simon said.

“The draft guidelines provide advice on recommended ‘separation distances’ for various industrial, commercial and agricultural uses to mitigate potentially offensive emissions to air at the earliest planning and development stages.

“Adequate separation distances are one of the most effective means to reduce potential future conflict between land uses.

“The guidelines are designed to inform the planning process and help industry and developers locate their activities in a way that minimises the impacts of air emissions.”

Mr Corbell said the guidelines would apply to new industrial activities and redevelopment proposals, but would not be applied retrospectively.

“The guidelines bring the ACT into line with other jurisdictions,” Mr Corbell said.

“Industrial and other activities in appropriate zones will be protected from encroachment by residential and other sensitive land uses as well as ensuring the amenity of residents is protected.”

The draft guidelines are available on www.timetotalk.act.gov.au.
