Springtime paintings and other art in Canberra this weekend

WITH spring so near and yet so far, Diana Watson’s lush paintings of still lifes and flowers, “Cornucopia”, looks like a breath of fresh air.

THE multi-pronged exhibition, “Japanese Encounter,” continues at M16 Artspace until July 27. It includes: “Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art;” “Hbiki”— textiles, painting, print, photography and sculpture inspired by Japan from Emily Casey, Maija Fredrika, Melinda Heal, Jed Henry, Alan J Jones, Amy Kerr-Menz, Patrick O’Keeffe and Stephon Russell; and Anime movie screenings in Japanese with English subtitles —July 19, 12.30pm, “Wolf Children” (PG, 117 mins) and July 20, 12.30pm, “Spirited Away” (PG, 125 mins)

IT’LL be a case of ‘Finns to the fore’, the Australian Chamber Orchestra is saying as pianist Paavali Jumppanen joins the orchestra’s Principal Cello, Timo-Veilkko Valve and Principal Violin, Satu Vänskä, to become the third Finn performing in their current tour, coming to Llewellyn Hall this Saturday 19 July at 8pm. GEOFFREY Dunn & Marina Talevski have a collaborative show of fresh art and words, to be opened tonight Thursday July 17 by poet PS Cottier at The Front Gallery in Wattle Street, Lyneham. They’ve mixed poetry, photography, sculpture and installation into works exploring the written word and visualisations of poetic elements. “2 Tens & A Tomato” runs until July 28 and will feature a poetry slam on July 25 at 8pm.


ALSO at The Front Bar and Gallery on Saturday July 19 from 8pm are Cracked Actor and Naked Bodies, featuring Quang Dinh and ‘Ride On’, the first single from their forthcoming debut LP.

PLAYING Field Studio is showcasing what its residency artists have achieved during their time in the studio in a FREE showing of their work from 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm this Sunday July 20 at their headquarters, 2 Kingsley Street, Acton. John Lombard (scriptwriter) will be discussing the development of his play & Jane Ingall (dancer/performer) will discuss how the “Somebody’s Aunt” project benefited from the residency.
