A touch of magic at Goulburn writers’ festival

GOULBURN Mulwaree Library’s first Reader Writer Festival is coming up this weekend and with more than 24 events slated, they’re promising a touch of magic.

The event will host more than 15 author talks and presentations with well-known identities including Tim Fischer, Costa Georgiadis and Edwina Wyatt.

Local authors will be showcasing and selling their books. Goulburn library manager Erin Williams can hardly conceal her excitement, saying: “This event is something totally new that has never been done before and the Goulburn community is excited.”

In an unusual twist there’ll be a free magic show called “Books are Magic” presented by magician Joel Howlett and an additional sleight-of-hand performance with audience participation.

The Caroline Chisholm Courtyard will come alive at lunch time with special guests and children’s authors reading from their own books, which they have written and/or illustrated. Paper-folding artist Tracy Luff will introduce the magic of origami in the library, showing how to make birds from recycled books.

Tania McCartney, Danielle McDonald and George Ivanoff will talk about their inspiration in writing and/or illustrating children’s books and a literary lunch will be held, with a three- course Mediterranean-themed meal and local wines from Kingsdale Winery and authors including Canberra’s own Karen Viggers sharing the table. There’ll also be readings from local poet Russell Erwin and performances by the Lieder Theatre Company.

Author RA Spratt will talk about writing comedy and plotting mysteries while Nicole Godwin, as she reads her picture book “Ella” and Jeff Apter discusses “Playing To Win: The Definitive Biography of John Farnham”.

The Goulburn Mulwaree Library Reader Writer Festival, centred at the library, 10am-5pm, Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13. Information to 4823 4435, entry is mostly free; however, bookings are essential for all talks and workshops, to goulburnaustralia.com.au
