Time to improvise with SoundOut

IT’S time for the annual “SoundOut” International Festival of Free Improvisation, Free Jazz and Experimental Music in Canberra from January 23-25.

This is the 5th year of “SoundOut” festival, and director Richard Johnson is promising “the continuation of the incredible bristling explorative sonic arts event”. This time round he has sourced musicians from Australia, France, Norway, Poland, UK/US, Germany, and Canada to “mix, cross-fertilize, and move sound mountains to inspire inquiring ears”.

Among the headliners are Australian improviser Jim Denley, UK/US Voice and violin pair the V&A Duo join Australian experimental film maker Louise Curham, while  the Overtone Ensemble from Australia “delves into the inner sound of metal rods.”

As well, pianist Cor Fuhler explores the world of the prepared piano, Kim Myhr and dancer Maya Repillion (Fr/NL) explore the sound-dance boundaries.

Other performers are  bassists Clayton Thomas and Slawek Janicki,  Radio,  Ross Manning,  Rosalind Hall and Dave Brown,  Evan Dorrian, John Porter, Reuben Lewis Rhys Butler and Johnson himself.

All the artists, he says  are “involved in an international dialogue that is essential to the unfolding of new music structures and what it means to be human in the 21st Century”.
