Treasures and other arts this weekend

“TREASURES of Canberra” co-author Lucy Quinn reveals her three favourite items from the National Film and Sound Archive collection. The NFSA was among the collecting institutions to contribute to “Treasures”. You can join her in conversation with curator Jennifer Coombes as they discuss her book and the work of the NFSA. WE keep hearing great things about Sui Jackson’s unusual exhibition “Nature-Mache” at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place Dickson, which consists of great banners of beautiful hand-made paper made from organic matter. It’s up until this Sunday, July 27.


TO bring some warmth and magic to the long Canberra winter, Margaret Dimoff Gallery in Deakin is presenting a special ‘Christmas in July’ event featuring Margaret’s multi-layered paintings, Camille Thomsett’s kinetic art sculptures, magic and laughter by Majura, the Magician, acoustic music performed by Rob Thomsett and Christmas hors d’oeuvres. From 5 to 7pm on Saturday, July 26 at the Margaret Dimoff Gallery, 36-38 Grey Street, Deakin. All welcome.

“THE Anatomy of Life” is Angela Parragi’s new body of work, inspired by the artist’s father’s sudden and surprising triple bypass heart surgery. The sometimes confronting exhibition is composed of traditional portraits of Parragi’s father alongside more anatomical works. Opening 6pm today, Thursday July 24 Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka 19 Furneaux Street, Manuka. Until August 3 Wednesday to Sunday 11pm to 5pm.


GEOFFREY DUNN & Marina Talevski have a collaborative show of fresh art and words at The Front Gallery in Wattle Street, Lyneham, mixing poetry, photography, sculpture and installation into works exploring the written word and visualisations of poetic elements. “2 Tens & A Tomato” runs until July 28 and will feature a poetry slam this Friday, July 25, at 8pm.

THE multi-pronged exhibition, “Japanese Encounter,” continues at M16 Artspace until July 27. It includes: “Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art;” “Hbiki”— textiles, painting, print, photography and sculpture inspired by Japan from Emily Casey, Maija Fredrika, Melinda Heal, Jed Henry, Alan J Jones, Amy Kerr-Menz, Patrick O’Keeffe and Stephon Russell.

CRAFTACT: Canberra Craft and Design Centre in the North Building has 3 exhibitions that are opening at the Centre next Thursday at 6pm and running until August 30. The fourth instalment of their “Embracing Innovation” series, will feature work by craft and design practitioners who are incorporating new technologies into their practices. South Australian glass artist Kristel Britcher will also be featured in our gallery, with her solo exhibition “Metamophosi,” while in their Crucible Showcase is “Material and Structure,” contemporary Jeweller Phoebe Porter’s first solo exhibition in Canberra in 7 years.


STEVE Lane & the Autocrats were featured on The Wiggles tribute album alongside the likes of Sarah Blasko, Busby Marou and Clare Bowditch. Their new album “#2 Birds Taking Flight” was written and produced by Lane and recorded mostly with the same artists as the first album. They’ll be at The Front Gallery and Cafe, in Lyneham this Thursday July 24.

“STARS of the Tokyo stage” explores kabuki and modern Japanese printmaking in the context of the astounding changes taking place in Tokyo as the 20th century unfolded. It’s at the National Gallery of Australia, until October 12. Free.
