DANCE Week for 2014 continues apace this weekend with communal, folk and Latin dancing, and a serious exploration of contemporary dance.

The weekend will feature a social afternoon of dances with Canberra International Folk Dancing Association and Capital Folk Musicians at Yarralumla Uniting Church on Saturday, May 10 from 1:30-4pm, with afternoon tea included. $5. On Sunday May 11 there will be Zouk and Lambada classes and social dancing at Canberra Seniors Centre in Watson, from 6.30pm. $7.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend is “Dance on the Edge” at the Belconnen Arts Centre. Billed as “a vibrant visual smorgasbord of selections from local dance artists,” it runs the full gamut of contemporary, classical and international dance.

The artists performing this year include Jake Kuzma who performs an athletic fusion of contemporary and breakdance and Lauren Vieira a Classical Ballet dancer who joined a European circus – Circus Krone – for several years.

Holly Diggle, Amy Dawson and Rebecca Allan are performing a work by choreographer Cadi McCarthy exploring the complexities of communication, while Alison Plevey is presenting a film about her long time investigation into site-specific dance. McCarthy will also show a film titled “That Place In Between,” exploring elements of her recent artistic residency at BAC.

Veteran dancer and choreographer Elizabeth Cameron Dalman is performing “CROIX,” created for the “Mirror Image” project – a collaboration between Mirramu Dance company and dancers from Taiwan and Malaysia, to the music of contemporary Australian composer Andrew Ford.

Rachael Hilton and Melissa Lee from Hilal Dance Canberra, which works in the area of contemporary Egyptian dance, will perform, while Jamie Winbank is performing “Sonder,” which examines the concept that each passer-by is “living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”

Troupe Olabisi.  a trio of dancers with live musicians, will perform traditional and modern African dance from Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Zimbabwe, with drums and percussion.
