Zines and other arts: what’s on and where

A ‘zine’ (pronounced zeen as in magazine), is a small circulation of self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images.

NOW in Gallery 2, Tuggeranong Arts Centre is staging “ZineSTARS,” an exhibition of professional artists, a pop-up student exhibition and a public workshop, featuring works by Ampersand Duck, Benjamin Craddock, Bernie Slater, Byrd, Nat Clark, Paul Summerfield and Andrew Galan, until August 30. Also, there’ll be a zine workshop for people aged 15-25 years with Nat Clarke on August 9. Inquiries to 6293 1443.


ALSO at TAC, until August 29, is “Seeing the Obvious” 18 paintings in which Christopher Oates explores the contrast between the rigidity of glass, steel, concrete and stone and the scruffiness and disorder of grass, trees and scrub. Oates says, “I love the contrast of wilderness and big city, the urban fighting with the bush and the bush fighting back – median strips butting up to highways”.


SCREENING since 1966, the ANU Film Group is unsinkable. Australia’s largest film society screens over 180 films a year in two half-yearly programs at the Coombs Theatre in the ANU. This weekend for instance are Divergent 7:30pm, Fri August 8, the 9, 59 pm, Young & Beautiful (Jeune & jolie). ARTIST Michele England is just a little obsessed with the Maneki Neko — “money kat” to you and me. According to England this object has changed with the times – from an “engimono” that ensured a good silk crop to being used on the lucky shelf in Tokyo brothels. England’s paintings and drawings are on display at the “Not Waving” solo exhibition at CCAS, 19 Furneaux St, and Manuka. Opens 6pm tonight, Thursday August 7 and runs until Sunday August 17, Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. All welcome.

“SYNERGY — Shibori Down Under” is a showcase of shaped, resist-dyed shibori (the fabric dying technique incorporating folding and manipulation of fabric) created by the members of the World Shibori Network Australia and New Zealand (WSNANZ). Now at Belconnen Arts Centre until August 24. Meet the artists, 2pm this Sunday, August 10.


MEANTIME in the foyer at BAC is “All the Young Dudes,” in which photographic work of Abigail Varney and Samuel Townsend explores notions of beauty perceived in the male subject and the various guises he assumes. Meet the artists, 1.30pm this Sunday, August 10.

AND in the Arts Lounge at BAC is “A Printed Space,” beautiful pieces of jewellery, necklaces, earrings and brooches by Anna Sutherland, signalling the launch of a new design range for her label ‘Maddison Jayne’ using digitally printed fabric. Sutherland was awarded this exhibition by Belconnen Arts Centre as part of the ANU Emerging Artist Support Scheme. Meet Sutherland at 1pm this Sunday, August 10.

BUNGENDORE Wood Works is turning on a glass of mulled wine and “ some fire twirling” at 5.30pm tomorrow Friday 8 August before the viewing of The Hannah Cabinet, made by Geoff Hannah over a six year period using 34 different Australian and international timbers, 4 species of shell and 17 varieties of precious stone. TWO of Bungendore Wood Works Gallery’s favourite artists, Maynard Waters and Chan Dissanayake are opening a joint exhibition which runs until September 9. Meet the Artists Saturday August 9 from 2pm, All welcome. Waters captures the essence of an Australia that he chooses to view with an “intentional selective blindness” to present a nostalgic and romantic viewpoint of the country and city through the workingman’s eyes.

IN “Mistique,” Dissanayake studies the effects and plays of light under misty atmospheric conditions, inspire by Canberra, where as he says, mist and fog are regular visitors.

MUSIC mixes with politics when the CFMEU Canberra Branch hosts an informal cocktail function for Ailí Labañino Cardoso at the Tradies Club, Woden, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm tonight, Thursday August 7, entertained by local group “Trio Encuentro.” Cardoso is the daughter of Ramon Labañino, one of the Cuban Five who has been a political prisoner in the USA since 1998. All welcome.

RANDOM9 is an independent Canberra-based artist collective that was established in 2010 with the aim of promoting the artistic practice of its individual members. Right now in the ANU School of Art Foyer Gallery they’re running an exhibition/installation of painting, jewellery, print, photomedia, sculpture, glass, textiles, and video, digital, sound and dance titled “Rhythm”. 10.30am to 5pm weekdays and 12pm -5pm Saturday until August 16.


THIS Sunday August 10 at 3pm in Wesley Music Centre, Art Song is presenting “Woman’s Song”, in Judith Colquhoun (soprano), Janene Broere (alto), Greg Wallace (tenor), Peter Smith (baritone) and Colin Forbes (piano) will perform selections from the major contribution to English-language song by women composers and poets of the Victorian-Edwardian era and the English musical renaissance of the 20th century. Tickets only at the door.

IN “Spare Time,” Aaron Garlick, Anja Loughhead, Jacob Potter, Daniel Savage, Chris Sutevski and Danny Wild explore time that is free from duties or responsibilities, free time, leisure time and/or time that is available for ease and relaxation. They’re 2014 Studio Residents at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space but the show is in the Photospace Gallery at ANU Art School Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm until Friday August 15.
