VICE-CHANCELLOR Ian Young has announced that there will be no more cigarettes smoked on campus (although there will still be some designated smoking zones).
“To mark World No Tobacco Day on Sunday 31 May, I am announcing the University has decided to go smoke free from the start of second semester on July 20,” Ian said.
“We’ve consulted widely with our staff and students and the new policy has widespread support from the ANU community.
“We understand the change will be difficult for some smokers, so ANU will provide extra support to staff to help them quit the habit. ANU will pay for QUIT courses for staff and PhD students. Undergraduate students can contact ANUSA for details of how to access QUIT courses.
At the same time, there will still be some designated smoking zones, near licenced venues and student residences.
ANU believes the decision to have a smoke free campus will send a strong message about leading a healthy life. The University is committed to providing a safe and healthy campus environment for all staff, students, and visitors.
