On stage

ENTER a magical journey through the seasons with Charlie & Lola in “Charlie & Lola’s Extremely New Play”. The sequel to “Charlie & Lola’s Best Bestest Play”, the stars of the hit ABC and BBC TV series and books by Lauren Child, are brought to life through puppetry, live action and music at The Playhouse, January 10-11.

PRESENTING an artform 2500 years in the making, Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious dance company, Chitrasena Dance Company, will perform “Dancing for the Gods” at The Playhouse, January 15.

ON January 22, Passenger, the British singer/songwriter, performs his “Whispers” show at Canberra Theatre. It follows the release of the album of the same name, his sixth.

Exhibitions

THE Australian War Memorial has two recently opened exhibitions – “Ben Quilty: After Afghanistan” and “Alex Seton: As of Today”, on display until May 27.

THE “Glass X Design” exhibition, featuring the collaborative efforts of established and emerging designers and glass artists from across Australia, will be on display at The Glassworks, Kingston, until January 25.

“TRAVERSING Antarctica: The Australian Experience”, a rare collection of original equipment and diaries from early expeditions to Antarctica, will be exhibited by the National Archives until February 1.

The Archives is also showing “A Ticket to Paradise”, revealing the human stories of post-World War II Australian migration.

“SPIRITED: Australia’s Horse Story”, at the National Museum features icons of Australia’s thoroughbred racing history, horsedrawn vehicles and riding equipment, and trophies won by leading equestrians and rodeo stars. It closes on March 9.

THE National Portrait Gallery’s “In the Flesh” exhibition features 10 Australian artists confronting the concept of humanness and the experiences of consciousness and emotion through contemporary art.

THE recently opened summer blockbuster exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia is “James Turrell: A Retrospective”. “Alive and Spirited” is showing in the Children’s Gallery.

For kids

THE Kingston Glassworks is running various summer programs including “Make Your Own Tiles” until January 25, “Make Your Own Paperweight” and “The Great Glass Adventure” that offers a special behind-the-scenes journey for kids.

THE National Film and Sound Archive is showing classic Disney films in the Arc Cinema throughout January, starting with “Bambi” on January 7; “Alice in Wonderland”, January 11; “Lady and the Tramp”, January 14; “The Jungle Book”, January 18, and “The Aristocats”, January 21.

THE Old Bus Depot Markets reopen in 2015 with its “Portobello Road” markets featuring antiques, collectables and vintage items, and the Strathnairn Arts Association is offering various summer workshops, including “Shibori for Children” between January 12-16.

THE National Museum will be opening the “Discovery Space: Carts, Carriages and Carousels” on weekdays between January 12 -23. Children can make their own hobby horse or horse drawn toy cart, inspired by the toys on show in the “Spirited: Australia’s Horse Story” exhibition.

Sport

ON January 8 the Canberra Cavalry takes on the Brisbane Bandits at Narrabundah Ballpark, in a four-day clash involving four separate games (normal in baseball), on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7pm, and Sunday at noon. The Cavalry will then face the Perth Heat from January 15-18.

THE Canberra Capitals will challenge the West Coast Waves on January 9 and on January 15 play the Sydney Uni Flames at the AIS Arena.

THE AFC Asian Cup will kick off in Canberra on January 10 with a match between Korea Republic and Oman at Canberra Stadium, followed by UAE vs Qatar on January 11, Kuwait vs Korea Republic on January 13, Bahrain vs UAE on January 15, China PR vs DPR Korea on January 18, and Iraq vs Palestine on January 20.

THE Prime Minister’s XI plays England under lights at the Manuka Oval, on January 14.
