Better shelters on show at Floriade

BETTER Shelter, first seen last week at The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, has been moved to Commonwealth Park for a pop-up version of the popular children’s exhibition “PLAY UP —The Right to Shelter”, showing at Floriade and offering a mixture of fun and consciousness-raising for the young.

“PLAY UP—The Right to Shelter” is the museum’s exhibition which engages families to explore the right to shelter as stated in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN, 1995). In 2015 UNHCR signed an agreement to deploy 30,000 shelters for its operations worldwide.

The venture is the result of a new partnership between MOADOPH and the IKEA Foundation, with Better Shelter – a weatherproof, solar powered temporary shelter that offers a more dignified home for displaced persons around the world and currently in the field in Iraq, Ethiopia, Nepal and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
